Nation's Only Table Tennis Dedicated Training Center 'Busan Table Tennis Gymnasium' Opens
Professional Table Tennis Player Training Available, Also Open to General Public
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Yoon Yoseop] The ‘Busan Table Tennis Gymnasium,’ the only table tennis-exclusive training facility in the country, is opening.
Busan City announced on the 6th that it will hold the opening ceremony of the ‘Busan Table Tennis Gymnasium,’ located in the Dongsam Innovation District of Yeongdo-gu, on the afternoon of the 11th.
The opening ceremony will be attended by about 150 people, including Busan Mayor Oh Keo-don, officials from the Table Tennis Association, and local residents, and will proceed with pre-ceremony performances such as jisinbalgi (traditional Korean ground-cleansing ritual) followed by the official event.
On this day, various events will also be held to commemorate D-40 days until the ‘2020 Busan World Table Tennis Championships,’ which will be hosted in Korea for the first time.
The construction of the Busan Table Tennis Gymnasium was a project promoted under an agreement in 2015 between Busan City, the Yoo Nam-kyu Table Tennis Foundation, and the Busan Table Tennis Association. It carries the meaning of honoring the fame of Busan-born table tennis players Yoo Nam-kyu, Hyun Jung-hwa, and Ahn Jae-hyung, who led the golden era of Korean table tennis in the 1980s, as well as Yeongdo-gu, which has illuminated Busan table tennis.
The Busan Table Tennis Gymnasium is the only specialized table tennis gymnasium facility nationwide. It will be used as an exclusive training center for elite athletes and will also be open to the general public, greatly contributing to the revitalization of recreational table tennis.
On the first floor, 10 table tennis tables have been installed for general users, and on the second floor, 15 tables along with specialized floor mats, retractable chairs, and wall collision prevention facilities are equipped for professional table tennis players’ training.
