Gangbuk-gu Initiates Emergency Duty System for Spring Wildfire Prevention
Focused Deployment of Wildfire Prevention and Suppression Teams, Conducting Suppression Training, and Carrying Out Prevention Campaign Activities
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Gangbuk-gu (Mayor Park Gyeom-su) has established a wildfire response headquarters and entered an emergency duty system to prevent and combat wildfires during the spring "Wildfire Prevention Period" until May 15.
The most common cause of wildfires in Korea is ignition due to the carelessness of hikers. Gangbuk-gu consists of 55% forest area within its administrative district, and Bukhansan and Opaesan are popular hiking spots, making the area relatively more exposed to wildfire risks compared to other regions.
Accordingly, the district has focused on deploying specialized wildfire prevention and firefighting teams mainly around Bukhansan, where many hikers visit. These prevention and firefighting teams conduct surveillance activities against unauthorized hikers and flammable materials in vulnerable areas, and are responsible for initial firefighting and mop-up operations in case of wildfire occurrence.
To improve the skills of firefighting team members and ensure systematic response during fire incidents, joint firefighting drills will be conducted with related organizations such as fire stations and the Korea National Park Service.
Furthermore, the district plans to strengthen preventive activities through collaboration with related organizations and actively carry out campaigns to raise public awareness about wildfire risks.
A Gangbuk-gu official urged the public to refrain from burning garbage near forest areas, entering restricted hiking zones, and carrying fire or flammable materials when hiking.
Mayor Park Gyeom-su of Gangbuk-gu stated, "Since wildfires can cause enormous damage once they occur, we plan to devote all efforts to prevention and monitoring," and added, "We ask for the active cooperation and participation of all citizens."
