Good News Continues on State of the Nation Address Day, One Day Before Impeachment Rejection
[Asia Economy New York=Special Correspondent Baek Jong-min] U.S. President Donald Trump's approval rating has reached its highest point since his inauguration. This is attributed to notable achievements in both economic and security aspects, such as concluding the trade war with China and eliminating a key figure in the Iranian military. With the impeachment motion against him effectively dismissed and the State of the Union address to Congress approaching, he has been presented with an excellent opportunity to promote his accomplishments.
On the 4th (local time), Gallup, a polling firm, announced that Trump's approval rating (as of January 29) was 49%, up 3 percentage points from the previous month. This far exceeded the previous high of 46% in April last year. It is a rare phenomenon that his approval rating rose even during the Senate impeachment proceedings.
Gallup cited three main reasons for the rise in Trump's approval rating: the elimination of Iranian military commander Qasem Soleimani, the U.S.-China Phase One trade agreement, and the signing of the new North American trade agreement (USMCA) replacing NAFTA. In particular, support for the Soleimani assassination operation was 53%. This is interpreted as a sign of strong public support for his vision of a great and safe America.
The recent increase in approval ratings is analyzed to have a positive effect on President Trump ahead of the November presidential election. He was especially encouraged by the overwhelming support he received at the Republican Iowa caucus held the day before. Upon the Iowa caucus results, President Trump tweeted, "Big Iowa win."
Additionally, the opposition Democratic Party's self-inflicted damage by delaying the announcement of the caucus results?the first hurdle of the presidential election?by 20 hours is also favorable to President Trump. U.S. media described the Democrats as having conceded victory to Trump. Trump himself mocked, "When will the Democrats start blaming Russia instead of the voting disaster contradiction?" and said, "(The Democrats) really messed up in Iowa." This was a jab at the Democrats' claim of Russian interference in the last election.

The impeachment trial, which has been a stumbling block for President Trump, will effectively conclude with the Senate's final vote on the 5th. As the dismissal is expected, he will be freed from the impeachment constraints that have bound him since September last year. The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) quoted Trump’s close aides saying that he is feeling victorious as he prepares to deliver the State of the Union address between the Iowa caucus and the impeachment dismissal.
