Macau Suspends Casino Operations for Two Weeks to Prevent Spread of New Coronavirus
[Asia Economy Reporter Jeong Hyunjin] The Macau government announced that it will suspend casino operations for two weeks to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus infection (Wuhan pneumonia), local media including Bloomberg and Macau TDM reported on the 4th.
According to the reports, Ho Iat Seng, Chief Executive of Macau, stated at a press conference that "a measure to suspend the operation of casinos and related entertainment industries for fifteen days has been decided." On the same day, the cumulative number of confirmed cases in Macau increased to 10 with additional new coronavirus cases.
Macau could suffer a significant blow due to the suspension of casino operations, which are the backbone of its economy. Regarding this, Chief Executive Ho said, "Currently, Macau's economy can withstand (the casino suspension)." Bloomberg reported that this announcement comes amid Macau struggling to recover from the worst economic growth rate since 2015. Bloomberg also noted that this is the second time Macau has taken such an extreme measure, the first being a 33-hour casino shutdown due to typhoon damage in 2018.
