Brothers Who Received Red Scarves, Fighter Pilots
[Asia Economy Reporter Yang Nak-gyu] The Air Force will hold the '19-3rd Advanced Flight Training Course Completion Ceremony' presided over by Air Force Chief of Staff Won In-chul at the 1st Fighter Wing on the 4th. At this ceremony, a younger brother will receive the 'Red Scarf,' following his older brother, creating a pair of sibling Air Force pilots.
Second Lieutenant Shin Yang-hwan (Air Force Academy Class 66, photo), who received the 'Red Scarf,' expressed brotherly affection, saying, "I am here today because I always had a reliable support in my father and my older brother who always provided solutions in times of crisis."
Lieutenant Shin's older brother is Captain Shin Yo-hwan (Air Force Academy Class 64), who is serving as an F-5 pilot. Their father is Lieutenant Colonel Shin Young-seok of the Army. All the family members are active-duty military personnel. Before the ceremony, Lieutenant Shin stated through materials distributed by the Air Force, "I will diligently hone my skills together with my brother and do my best at the forefront of defending our nation's airspace."
Lieutenant Kwon Hyuk-jun (Air Force Academy Class 66), who became a fighter pilot inheriting the patriotic spirit of his grandfather, a Korean War veteran, and his maternal grandfather, a Korean War national merit recipient, is also drawing attention. Having been greatly influenced by his grandfather and maternal grandfather since childhood, Lieutenant Kwon developed a dream of becoming a fighter pilot encouraged by his father, who had a strong interest in the aviation field.
Lieutenant Kwon said, "I am proud that I can somewhat resemble the lives of my grandfather and maternal grandfather who devoted themselves to the country," adding, "I will devote myself wholeheartedly to perfectly carrying out the mission of airspace defense."
On this day, a total of 63 new pilots will receive the Red Scarf, the symbol of Republic of Korea Air Force pilots: 40 from Air Force Academy Class 66, 2 from Officer Candidate School Class 45, and 21 from Bachelor Officer Candidate Class 140. The pilots will be assigned to frontline flying squadrons after completing the Lead-In Fighter Training (LIFT) or Combat Readiness Training (CRT) and will carry out the mission of defending the airspace of the Republic of Korea.
Chief of Staff Won urged, "In the future, you will be given greater roles and responsibilities as the main force of the Air Force to protect the national interests of the Republic of Korea and peace on the Korean Peninsula."
