Gangdong-gu Installs Emergency Bells in Private Public Restrooms
Completion of Emergency Bell Installation at 27 Private Public Restrooms as a Promise of the 7th Civilian Administration... Voice-Recognition Emergency Bells Installed in Unisex Restrooms to Detect Scream Sounds
[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Gangdong-gu (Mayor Lee Jeong-hoon) has completed the installation of safety emergency bells in 27 privately opened restrooms to ensure that residents, especially women vulnerable to crime, can use the restrooms with peace of mind.
The emergency bell installation project for open restrooms is a pledge of Gangdong-gu's 7th public administration term. The installation of emergency bells, which was previously limited to public restrooms, was expanded to privately opened restrooms in 2018. The district invested about 30 million KRW in the project, completing the installation of emergency bells in a total of 27 open restrooms: 12 in 2018 and 15 in 2019.
Among the restrooms equipped with emergency bells, three unisex restrooms were deemed to have a higher risk of crime than others and were installed with voice recognition emergency bells.
If the emergency bell is touched or a scream exceeding a certain decibel level is detected, it automatically connects to the police station's control room, enabling a prompt response in emergencies.
In particular, the Shinsung Tongsang building located in Dunchon-dong, one of the locations where emergency bells were installed, opened its underground parking lot free of charge for visitors following the airing of SBS's program "Baek Jong-won's Alley Restaurant." At the same time, the number of people using the underground restroom increased, necessitating crime prevention measures.
Accordingly, the district installed safety emergency bells and warning lights there. The business expressed gratitude, stating that residents and employees can use the restrooms more safely because of this.
