Gwangju City Council to Hold 'Citizen Declaration Ceremony Responding to the Climate Crisis' on the 2nd of Next Month
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Seon-gang] The Gwangju Metropolitan Council and the Gwangju Climate Crisis Emergency Action (Preparatory Committee) announced on the 30th that they will hold a ‘Citizen Proclamation Ceremony Responding to the Climate Crisis’ at 3 p.m. on the 2nd of next month in the large conference room on the 3rd floor of Gwangju City Hall to address the increasingly serious climate crisis issue.
The proclamation ceremony will include a special lecture by Dr. Cho Cheon-ho, former director of the National Institute of Meteorological Sciences, a reading of the declaration, and a citizen performance. Dr. Cho, who has raised awareness of the climate crisis through broadcasts and other means, will present the reality, causes, and alternatives of the worsening climate crisis and propose what Gwangju City should do.
The Gwangju Climate Crisis Emergency Action (Preparatory Committee) will propose a ‘Climate Emergency Declaration’ to the government, Gwangju Metropolitan City, the city council, and the education office through the declaration on that day.
The ‘Climate Emergency Declaration’ is spreading worldwide, centered on national and local governments. As of January this year, 1,321 cities in 26 countries have participated in the declaration, pledging to prioritize climate crisis response as their top task.

Kim Dong-chan, chairman of the Gwangju Metropolitan Council and one of the event’s hosts, said, “Since 2015, Gwangju City has been striving to achieve 17 goals and 104 detailed indicators for green growth, including green economy, resource circulation, urban forests, transportation environment, and local food, in line with the sustainable development agenda presented at the UN General Assembly. The Gwangju City Council is also actively participating in legislative and research activities to improve the climate environment, such as forming a research group on ‘Climate Change Response in the Era of the 4th Industrial Revolution,’ enacting ordinances to reduce and manage fine dust, and ordinances for air environment preservation.” He added, “Through the proclamation ceremony, an opportunity will be created to derive solutions to the climate crisis and to mature the awareness and actions of the Gwangju community regarding the climate crisis.”
