Jeongeup-si Confirmed as Host for the '2020 Cheonhajangsa Ssireum Festival'
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Jaegil] Jeongeup City in Jeonbuk announced on the 29th that it has secured the hosting rights for the '2020 Cheonhajangsa Ssireum Festival.'
Organized by the Korea Ssireum Association and hosted by the Jeongeup City Ssireum Association and Jeongeup City Sports Council, the event is scheduled to be held over seven days in November.
The Cheonhajangsa Ssireum Festival features about 900 athletes and officials participating in the men's and women's Cheonhajangsa matches, men's and women's weight class matches, university champion matches, and a special world champion match with foreign players.
It is one of the four major traditional folk ssireum tournaments, along with the Seollal, Chuseok, and Dano champion ssireum competitions.
The city expressed its determination to become a renowned ssireum hub by ensuring smooth preparations and successful hosting, starting with signing an agreement with the Korea Ssireum Association for the festival.
In line with this, the city is accelerating efforts for a new leap forward by reorganizing the Danpungmiin Ssireum Team, which is celebrating its 5th anniversary this year.
They are strengthening team competitiveness by recruiting outstanding athletes who have achieved excellent results in various competitions and are putting efforts into multiple areas.
A city official said, "Through this event, we will not only introduce Jeongeup's passionate and vibrant atmosphere nationwide but also greatly contribute to revitalizing the local economy."
Meanwhile, the city plans to continue attracting national-level sports competitions to build the image of 'Sports Mecca Jeongeup.'
