Guro-gu Takes Active Measures to Prevent Children's Traffic Accidents
This Year, a Total of 4.138 Billion KRW Invested to Greatly Expand and Improve Traffic Safety Facilities in Child Protection Zones... Installation of Speed Cameras, Yellow Traffic Lights, Crosswalk Spotlights, and More to Build a Dense Safety Network
[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Guro-gu (Mayor Lee Seong) has taken active measures to prevent traffic accidents involving children.
On the 29th, Guro-gu announced that it will invest a total budget of 4.138 billion KRW this year to strengthen traffic safety management in school zones to create safe school routes free from traffic accident concerns.
Based on the amendment to the Road Traffic Act known as the so-called ‘Min-sik Law,’ Guro-gu has established a ‘Comprehensive Plan for Preventing Child Traffic Accidents’ to expand and improve overall traffic safety facilities around elementary schools, kindergartens, and daycare centers.
According to the comprehensive plan, new projects will be implemented including ▶installation of additional speed enforcement cameras in school zones ▶installation of solar-powered LED safety signs ▶installation of pedestrian signals for school commute routes ▶replacement of old or damaged safety fences ▶expansion of waiting areas in front of crosswalks ▶maintenance of pedestrian safety facilities connected to protection zones.
New installations will also include ‘yellow traffic lights’ to enhance the visibility of school zones and ‘focused crosswalk lighting’ to help pedestrians be easily recognized at night or during bad weather.
Projects such as creating the Guro-style child pedestrian specialized street called ‘Amazon (a zone where children can freely run and play),’ installing yellow carpets and yellow footprints, expanding speed warning signs, and installing speed bumps will continue to be promoted.
Traffic safety facilities at locations with frequent elderly pedestrian accidents identified through big data will also be improved. Depending on the type of accident, CCTV, safety fences, speed warning signs will be installed, and colored road pavement will be applied.
Guro-gu plans to actively reflect the opinions of experts and local residents during the project implementation process to enhance the effectiveness and satisfaction of the projects.
