Choi Kyung-hwan, Representative of the Alternative New Party, Registers as Preliminary Candidate for Gwangju Buk-gu Eul
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Yukbong] Choi Kyunghwan, the party leader of the Alternative New Party and member of the National Assembly for Gwangju Buk-gu Eul, announced on the 22nd that he has completed the registration as a preliminary candidate for the April 15 general election in Gwangju Buk-gu Eul and has begun full-scale election campaigning.
Party leader Choi Kyunghwan said, “As the leader of the Alternative New Party, I will take the lead in achieving the unification of the third force to win the general election and lay the foundation for the re-creation of the 4th reform government,” adding, “We will become a true alternative force that prevents one-party dominance in Gwangju, creates a competitive system, maximizes the rights and interests of Gwangju and Honam, and advances regional politics.”
He continued, “During my four years as a member of the National Assembly, I have worked tirelessly for the development of Buk-gu and Gwangju and have accomplished much, but there are still many tasks ahead,” and stated, “I will walk step by step with the residents to improve their quality of life and make Buk-gu a better place to live.”
Starting his campaign with a Lunar New Year livelihood tour, party leader Choi Kyunghwan will visit shops and street vendors in Ilgok-dong, Maegok-dong, and Unam-dong on the 22nd and 23rd to listen to the difficulties of small business owners and self-employed people and exchange holiday greetings with residents purchasing ritual items.
On the 24th, the start of the Lunar New Year holiday, he will visit the Gwangju Northern Police Station, Northern Fire Station, Dongnim-dong 119 Safety Center, Dongun District Unit, Geon-guk District Unit, and nursing hospitals in Buk-gu to encourage workers who continue to work without rest during the holiday.
On the 26th, the day after the Lunar New Year, he will hold the 2020 Lunar New Year Our Culture Festival at the National Gwangju Museum, and on the 27th, he will attend the joint New Year’s bowing ceremony of the Democratic family at the Gwangju YMCA Mujin Hall.
Leader Choi Kyunghwan is also a May 18 Democratization Movement merit recipient who resisted the Chun Doo-hwan military regime, having spent a total of 2 years and 4 months in prison twice for the 1981 ‘Hakrim Incident’ and the 1986 Democratic Youth Federation (Mincheongryeon) activities.

Choi Kyunghwan, originally from Jangseong, Jeollanam-do, graduated from Gwangju Commercial High School and Sungkyunkwan University and served as the last secretary to President Kim Dae-jung. He was elected as the member of the National Assembly for Gwangju Buk-gu Eul in the 20th general election and is currently actively serving as the leader of the Alternative New Party.
