Orion, Improving Packaging Materials, Reduced Ink Usage by 24% Last Year
[Asia Economy Reporter Choi Saeng-hye] Orion announced on the 22nd that it reduced ink usage by 24% compared to before implementation by simplifying product packaging design and reducing the number of print colors last year.
From July to November last year, Orion sequentially simplified the packaging design and reduced the number of print colors for a total of 10 brands, including Fresh Berry, Moist Choco Chip, Digestive, and Fresh Cream Pie. The number of print colors on individual inner packaging was lowered from the previous 8 to 3 colors to 3 colors or less. During this period, Orion saved a total of 27 tons of ink, which is 24% of the previous usage. Based on the annual production volume of these products, this translates to an ink usage reduction of approximately 90 tons per year.
In 2015, Orion also reduced the number of print colors on packaging for 22 brands, saving about 88 tons of ink annually. Through these two rounds of packaging improvements, the amount of ink used in packaging manufacturing has been reduced by about 178 tons annually compared to before.
Since 2014, Orion has been continuously practicing company-wide eco-friendly management as part of ethical management, including the introduction of environmentally friendly printing equipment and packaging development. Starting in March, Orion will begin producing eco-friendly packaging using the ‘Flexo’ printing equipment introduced last year with an investment of 7 billion KRW. Through this, it is expected to further reduce annual ink usage by more than 50% compared to before, greatly contributing to the environment.
Orion also plans to continuously expand the products applying eco-friendly packaging. In 2017, Orion jointly developed eco-friendly packaging with partner companies that does not use harmful volatile organic solvents. This packaging reduces emissions of total hydrocarbon compounds (THC) and total volatile organic compounds (TVOC), harmful substances generated during manufacturing, by 83% and 75% respectively compared to before, providing a safer packaging method for both consumers and production workers. Based on this, in 2018, packaging for a total of 12 products including Choco Pie and Pokachip became the first in the confectionery industry to receive green certification from the Ministry of Environment.

Orion is linking its eco-friendly activities to increased consumer satisfaction. The cost savings from eco-friendly activities are returned to consumers through the ‘Good Packaging Project,’ which increases product quantity without raising prices. So far, this has been applied to a total of 17 products, and through improvements and efficiency in production facilities, Orion plans to further enhance both environmental protection and consumer satisfaction.
