The Mapo-gu Resident Safety Insurance, which began operation on the 15th, covers 11 types of compensation for damages suffered by approximately 400,000 Mapo-gu residents (including registered foreigners) due to various accidents.
The specific coverage includes △death from natural disasters such as typhoons, floods, and earthquakes △death and aftereffects from disasters such as explosions, fires, collapses, and landslides △death while using public transportation △death due to robbery △death by drowning △death from gas accidents △legal support for medical accidents △ransom for youth abduction and kidnapping △school zone traffic accident injuries (grades 1 to 5) △accidents involving persons of merit, etc.
The compensation amounts have a maximum limit of 20 million KRW, with 15 million KRW for death from natural disasters, 12 million KRW for death while using public transportation, up to 15 million KRW for school zone traffic accident injuries, and 20 million KRW for death while rescuing others from imminent danger to life, body, or property.
The coverage applies to all residents registered in Mapo-gu and registered foreigners, and enrollment is automatic upon moving in without any separate procedures.
The district pays the insurance premiums, and residents can directly claim and receive insurance payments from the Korea Local Finance Association if they suffer damages from accidents or disasters anywhere nationwide.
The Resident Safety Insurance can provide overlapping compensation even if the insured already has personal insurance.
In particular, it is expected to serve as a basic social safety net for marginalized groups who have not been able to subscribe to personal insurance due to economic reasons.
