Gwangju Dong-gu's 'Chueok-ui Chungjang Festival' Wins Festival Content Award for 5 Consecutive Years
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Seon-gang] The ‘Chueok-ui Chungjang Festival’ in Dong-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City, has been honored with the ‘Korea Festival Contents Award’ for five consecutive years.
Dong-gu (Mayor Im Taek) announced on the 17th that the ‘16th Chueok-ui Chungjang Festival’ was selected as the grand prize winner in the contents category at the ‘8th Korea Festival Contents Awards’.
The Korea Festival Contents Award selects outstanding festivals nationwide, and the Chungjang Festival has been honored with the grand prize in the contents category for five consecutive years among the four categories of contents, tourism, economy, and arts & tradition.
The Korea Festival Contents Award was established by the Korea Festival Contents Association to develop excellent local festivals nationwide into world-class festivals. The award ceremony will be held on the 20th of next month at the Baekbeom Kim Koo Memorial Hall in Yongsan-gu, Seoul.
The Chungjang Festival, the only festival in Gwangju designated as a ‘2020-2021 Korea Cultural Tourism Festival’ by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, has gained widespread recognition for the excellence of its contents through this award.
Held last fall under the theme ‘Memories, Generational Sympathy!’, the ‘16th Chueok-ui Chungjang Festival’ featured ‘Memories of Movies’ as its main concept, with a blue jeans dress code and a focus on Asian values, attracting over 400,000 visitors and showcasing its status as the nation’s largest street culture and arts festival.

Im Taek, Mayor of Dong-gu, said, “I believe the festival received favorable evaluations from the judges because it was organized with various programs that span generations from children to middle-aged and older adults, and experiential contents that visitors can relate to.” He added, “This year, we will do our best to provide differentiated attractions unique to the Chungjang Festival by exploring ways to leap forward as a global festival, centered on an expert task force team.”
