Choi Kyung-hwan, Leader of the Alternative New Party, Volunteers for Meal Service at Gwangju Disabled Welfare Center
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Yukbong] Choi Kyunghwan, leader of the Alternative New Party, announced that he participated in meal service volunteering at the Gwangju Dongnim-dong Municipal Welfare Center for the Disabled on the 17th, ahead of the Lunar New Year holiday.
Before becoming a member of the National Assembly, Choi Kyunghwan has been volunteering monthly for seven years since 2013, serving meals to about 500 disabled individuals. Every year, Choi has participated in kimchi-making volunteer work at the welfare center for the disabled and sharing events such as rice cake and songpyeon distribution during holidays like Lunar New Year and Chuseok.
As a member of the National Assembly, Choi Kyunghwan has shown special interest in promoting the rights and interests of disabled people. He has led the proposal of three disability-related bills that passed the plenary session of the National Assembly, including a bill guaranteeing the mobility rights of transportation-vulnerable groups to safely and conveniently board and alight, and a bill raising the mandatory purchase ratio of products made by severely disabled persons from 1% to 3%. He also led the proposal of a bill expanding disabled protection zones to all welfare facilities for the disabled to ensure their traffic safety.
Since 2013, Choi Kyunghwan has also attended annual holiday and year-end gatherings at Hampyeong Regeneration Village, a community of Hansen’s disease patients, fostering camaraderie, and he received an award for contributions to Hansen’s disease patients at the end of last year.

Choi Kyunghwan said, “While carrying out legislative activities, I have made efforts to meet and communicate directly with disabled people to resolve their difficulties and inconveniences,” adding, “Going forward, the Alternative New Party will take the lead in creating a social atmosphere of sharing by developing more legislation and policies to promote the rights and interests of disabled people.”
