[Asia Economy Reporter Park Hyesook] Former professional basketball player Jeong Byeong-guk (36), who was prosecuted for habitual public indecency on city streets, was sentenced to probation by the court.
Judge Jeong Byeong-sil of the Incheon District Court Criminal Division 3 presided over the first trial on the 16th for Jeong, who was prosecuted without detention on charges of public indecency, and sentenced him to 8 months in prison with 2 years of probation.
The judge also ordered Jeong to undergo 40 hours of sexual violence treatment lectures under probation supervision for 2 years and restricted him from working in child welfare-related facilities for 3 years.
Judge Jeong stated, "The defendant has a prior record of similar offenses, having once received a suspended indictment and a fine, yet he did not restrain himself and committed the crime again," adding, "The number of offenses is high, and the victim's suffering is considerable."
However, he explained the sentencing by saying, "Considering that the defendant has pledged to actively receive treatment and has family members to support."
Earlier, the prosecution had requested a sentence of 1 year imprisonment and 3 years of employment restriction for Jeong.
Jeong was prosecuted without detention on charges of committing indecent acts eight times between January and July of last year in the Rodeo Street area of Guwol-dong, Namdong-gu, Incheon.
In July of last year, the police received a 112 report from a female witness, checked CCTV around the crime scene, identified the suspect as Jeong, and arrested him in the parking lot of the Incheon Samsan World Gymnasium, the home stadium of the Electron Land basketball team.
At that time, the police judged Jeong's crimes to be habitual and applied for an arrest warrant, but the court dismissed the warrant, considering that "Jeong regrets his actions and has pledged to receive psychiatric treatment."
Jeong was previously prosecuted in March of last year for public indecency and was fined 3 million won by the Bucheon branch of the Incheon District Court.
Jeong, a graduate of Incheon Jemulpo High School and Chung-Ang University, joined Electron Land in 2007 as the 22nd pick in the 3rd round of the professional basketball rookie draft. He was a rare 3rd-round pick who once played as a regular starter and received the Sixth Man Award after the 2016?2017 season.
