Second Largest Diamond Rough Ever Sold to Louis Vuitton
[Asia Economy Reporter Naju-seok] Louis Vuitton has purchased a diamond rough known as the second largest ever recorded.
On the 15th (local time), the New York Times (NYT) reported that the French fashion company Louis Vuitton acquired a 1,785-carat rough diamond discovered last year in Botswana.
This rough diamond, called Sewelo (meaning "rare discovery" in the local language), has not had its sale price disclosed.
Michael Burke, CEO of Louis Vuitton, only referred to the price of Sewelo as "millions of dollars." Regarding the purchase, Burke also mentioned that Bernard Arnault, chairman of Louis Vuitton Mo?t Hennessy (LVMH), smiled while holding the rough diamond.
The NYT evaluated that Louis Vuitton’s purchase reflects the company’s intention to dominate the luxury jewelry market following its acquisition of the American jeweler Tiffany & Co. last year.
CEO Burke stated that after inspection, Sewelo could be separated into stones of sizes such as 904 carats and 891 carats.
