"Maintaining the Basic Position That a Rational and Fair Agreement Must Be Reached"
[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] The 11th meeting for the conclusion of the Republic of Korea-United States Special Measures Agreement (SMA) on defense cost-sharing was held over two days, from the 14th to the 15th (local time), in Washington DC.
On the 16th, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated, "Through this meeting, our side maintained the basic position that consultations should be conducted within the framework of the SMA, and that a reasonable and fair agreement should be reached," adding, "Both sides expanded mutual understanding and consensus, but it was confirmed that differences in positions still remain between the two sides."
Furthermore, both sides agreed to closely consult to minimize any gaps in the agreement through the prompt conclusion of a mutually acceptable agreement, thereby contributing to the ROK-US alliance and combined defense posture.
