Executive Council Meeting Held in Busan
Discussion on the Successful Hosting of the 'International Geological Congress (IGC) 2024'
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Yoon Yoseop] Busan City announced on the 14th that from the 15th for four days, the 'International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS) Executive Council Meeting' to discuss the successful hosting of the 'International Geological Congress (IGC) 2024' will be held at the Haeundae Ibis Ambassador Hotel.
The International Geological Congress (IGC) is the most prestigious global geological event held once every four years in the field of geology. In 2015, the Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources and the Geological Society of Korea jointly submitted a letter of intent to host, and at IGC 2016 (Cape Town, South Africa), Busan was selected as the host city for the first time in Korea, beating strong contenders such as Berlin, Germany, and Saint Petersburg, Russia.
At this Executive Council meeting, more than 80 officials from member countries, including the IUGS Executive Council officers, will participate to discuss the preparation status and future plans for IGC 2024.
On the 15th, a welcome dinner hosted by Busan City will be held to celebrate the IUGS Executive Council meeting being held in Busan.
Before the welcome dinner, Busan Mayor Oh Keo-don, in his capacity as co-chairman of the IGC 2024 Joint Preparatory Committee, will meet with Kim Bok-cheol, Director of the Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources, and Jung Chang-sik, President of the Geological Society of Korea, to review preparations for participation in IGC 2020 to be held in Delhi, India, in March, and discuss common interests such as promotion plans for the excellence of Busan's nature and geological resources, the next host city.

Busan City plans to proceed smoothly with the process of obtaining UNESCO Global Geopark certification for the Busan National Geopark, which was designated as a national geopark in 2013, using this Executive Council meeting as a turning point.
