Gyeonggi-do Special Judicial Police Conduct 'Intensive Inspection' of Over 30 Fire-Vulnerable Facilities in the Province
[Asia Economy (Suwon) = Reporter Lee Young-gyu] Gyeonggi Province is launching a focused inspection on illegal activities at vulnerable facilities to prevent fires during the winter season.
The Gyeonggi Provincial Special Judicial Police announced on the 10th that from the 15th of this month until the 28th of next month, they will conduct an intensive investigation targeting large construction sites in the province for illegal activities such as unauthorized handling of hazardous materials that could cause significant damage in the event of a fire.
The investigation targets about 30 construction sites with a high possibility of violations, located in areas where large buildings have recently been constructed, including Namyangju, Hanam, Yongin, Pyeongtaek, and Gimpo.
The main inspection items include ▲storing or handling hazardous materials exceeding the designated quantity without permission ▲compliance with safety management during hazardous material handling ▲adherence to fire safety standards (NFSC 606) for temporary firefighting facilities within construction sites ▲and compliance with safety rules during welding and cutting work.
If hazardous materials exceeding the designated quantity are stored or handled in places other than authorized storage facilities without permission, offenders may face up to three years in prison or a fine of up to 30 million KRW.
The Special Judicial Police plan to issue orders to suspend the use of hazardous materials upon detection of illegal handling and will also trace the suppliers to completely block the distribution of illegal hazardous materials at construction sites during winter.

A representative of the Special Judicial Police stated, "Winter construction sites often involve indoor work in confined spaces where metal sparks from welding can scatter and come into contact with hazardous materials, causing explosions, making them highly vulnerable to fires," and emphasized, "Illegal activities that threaten the safety of residents by violating fire safety standards will be strictly punished according to relevant regulations."
