20s Arrested for Fraudulent Used Goods Transactions in University Community
[Asia Economy Intern Reporter Kim Seul-gi] A man in his 20s who purchased accounts on the university community 'Everytime' (Eta) and then carried out fraudulent secondhand transactions was arrested by the police.
The police announced on the 9th that they have apprehended Lee (24) on charges of fraud and others for receiving money without delivering goods after claiming to sell high-priced smart devices on Eta boards of several universities and the Naver cafe 'Junggonara' from November to December last year, and are currently investigating.
According to the police, Lee bought Eta accounts for 30,000 won and committed the crimes by pretending to be a student of the respective schools. Lee mentioned the department and student ID number in each transaction to avoid suspicion from victims.
Eta is an online community accessible only after verification for each university, with authentication procedures for current students and graduates using university email addresses, addresses, and student ID verification. However, since Lee purchased verified accounts, the authentication process seemed to be meaningless.
Lee is also suspected of borrowing tens of millions of won from acquaintances without repayment and opening mobile phone lines under acquaintances' names to use in fraudulent transactions.
