WHO: Over 6,000 Deaths from Measles in Democratic Congo
[Asia Economy Reporter Cho Hyun-ui] The World Health Organization (WHO) announced on the 8th (local time) that more than 6,000 people have died from measles in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).
In a statement released that day, WHO reported that since the outbreak of measles in the DRC last year, about 310,000 suspected cases have been reported, with approximately 6,000 deaths. The spread of measles is attributed to low vaccination rates, an unstable healthcare system, and malnutrition.
Measles is caused by the measles virus and is highly contagious, developing in 90% of unprotected contacts.
