CJ Group Eldest Son Lee Seon-ho, Accused of Marijuana Smuggling and Smoking, Faces 5-Year Prison Sentence in Appeal Trial
Lee: "Regretful and Truly Reflecting" Appeals for Leniency
[Asia Economy Reporter Seongpil Cho] The prosecution has requested a prison sentence again in the second trial for Lee Sun-ho, the eldest son of CJ Group Chairman Lee Jae-hyun, who was indicted on charges including smuggling variant marijuana. On the 7th, at the appellate trial held by the Criminal Division 5 of the Seoul High Court (Presiding Judge Kim Hyung-doo), the prosecution asked the court to "maintain the original sentence request." In the first trial, the prosecution had requested a five-year prison sentence, stating, "The amount of smuggled marijuana is considerable, and the fact of smoking has been confirmed, so severe punishment is necessary."
This day’s trial was the first hearing of the appeal. However, since Lee’s side admitted to the prosecution’s charges and did not dispute the facts, the trial was concluded. In court, Lee said, "I deeply regret my extremely foolish actions and sincerely reflect on them," and "I apologize for disappointing my parents, family, wife, and colleagues who suffered because of my mistakes," asking the court for leniency. Lee’s lawyer also said, "The defendant admitted his crime and reflected on it, even voluntarily requesting detention during the investigation," and "As a father of one child who must live a new life, we ask for leniency." The court decided to announce the sentence for Lee’s appeal on the 7th of next month.
