[CES2020] Continental Unveils 'Transparent Hood' Showing Terrain Beneath Vehicle
[Asia Economy Reporter Suyeon Woo] Continental showcased its technological prowess in vehicle operation solutions development, including transparent hood, ultra-wideband technology, and touch-type three-dimensional imaging, at CES 2020.
On the 6th (local time), at a CES press conference held in Las Vegas, USA, Continental unveiled advanced innovative technologies in autonomous driving and user experience fields, including connectivity, data, and high-performance computing. Dirk Abendroth, Chief Technology Officer, said, "At this CES, we will demonstrate how we are realizing future technologies and creating groundbreaking elements of mobility technology in software, high-performance computing, safety, user experience, and connectivity."
On this day, Continental revealed the world's first launched 'transparent hood' technology. This feature projects the view beneath the hood to help drivers check the terrain and obstacles under the vehicle. The transparent hood is based on Continental's surround view system, which consists of four satellite cameras and an electronic control unit (ECU).
An intelligent image processing algorithm reconstructs the image under the vehicle and reflects it on the surround screen viewed by the driver. Continental received the CES 2020 Innovation Award in the Vehicle Intelligence and Transportation Products category for this innovative technology.
Additionally, Continental is integrating ultra-wideband (UWB) technology to make the operation of future keyless vehicles safer and more convenient. When UWB technology is combined with smartphones, it enables new functions such as opening vehicle doors or remote parking with a smartphone without a car key. Continental is playing a leading role in developing the foundation of UWB wireless standards related to vehicle use through the Car Connectivity Consortium (CCC), where BMW, Apple, and others are key members.
Furthermore, Continental introduced the next-generation natural 3D display, which plays a key role in interaction between people and vehicles at the center of the driver's seat for the first time. The natural 3D center stack display offers touch functionality to drivers and passengers and provides a 3D experience without special glasses or head tracker cameras using 3D lightfield technology.
With the growing importance of vehicle software, Continental developed an online platform that automates and standardizes vehicle software development and integration. The Continental Corporation Portal automates software delivery, testing, and verification processes, as well as data recovery from all software suppliers in case of errors, ensuring that only defect-free applications are installed in the actual development system.

At CES 2020, Continental also showcased collaborative technology for developing in-vehicle audio systems without speakers. This technology fills the interior space with realistic three-dimensional sound. The Ac2ated sound concept, born from combining two premium audio concepts, produces sound by vibrating surfaces inside the vehicle, eliminating the need for traditional speakers.
