Visiting the 5·18 Cemetery... Listening to the Voices of May Organizations
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] The Justice Party announced on the 6th that it paid respects at the May 18 Cemetery and held an on-site executive committee meeting.
On that day, about 100 people including Justice Party leader Sim Sang-jung, the leadership, Honam region city and provincial party chairpersons, candidates for the National Assembly, and party members visited the May 18 Cemetery and then had tea time with May 18 organizations.
Leader Sim Sang-jung began by saying, “We will strictly and thoroughly hold accountable the responsibility for the pain and sorrow of May Gwangju.”
She continued, “This year is the first year to start a new decade, and the most important theme is ‘change,’” emphasizing, “The spirit of May 18 should be expanded beyond anti-dictatorship democratization to socio-economic democratization that improves the lives of the people.”
She also stated, “This 21st general election is the first National Assembly election held after the Candlelight Revolution,” and argued, “We must firmly replace the old vested interest politics and, above all, expel the Liberty Korea Party, which remains a conservative Cold War force.”
She added, “Our Justice Party will firmly lead and check the Democratic Party and the government to properly uphold the Gwangju spirit and proceed on the path of reform.”
Floor leader Yoon So-ha said, “The Justice Party will take the lead in all support so that the May 18 Truth Investigation Commission can properly fulfill its role,” and stated, “We will eradicate forces that deny democracy, including the Liberty Korea Party, from the political arena.”
Vice leader Lim Han-sol said, “Protecting the value and spirit of May 18, the Justice Party will not stop at words but actively pursue and act to punish the main perpetrators of the Gwangju massacre,” and added, “We hope that Honam citizens will unite their strength in this year’s general election so that the Justice Party can complete the remaining tasks.”
