Prime Minister Candidate Jeong Sye-kyun's Confirmation Hearing to be Held on 7-8... "Opposition Party's Rigorous Scrutiny"
Morality and Work Competence Verification on the 7th, Witness and Reference Interrogation on the 8th
[Asia Economy Reporter Jang Sehee] The ruling and opposition parties have finalized the list of witnesses and reference persons who will appear at the confirmation hearing for Prime Minister nominee Jeong Sye-kyun. Accordingly, the confirmation hearing for nominee Jeong is scheduled to be held as originally planned over two days on the 7th and 8th.
According to the National Assembly on the 5th, the National Assembly Confirmation Hearing Special Committee (Confirmation Committee) held a plenary meeting on the afternoon of the 3rd and resolved to summon four witnesses: Jang Hajin, CEO of the Foundation Kukmin Sidae; Ahn Yeol, director of Kukmin Sidae; Jeong Jongok, head of Jeonbuk Bugwi Nonghyup; and Ko Byungguk, Seoul City Council member. Additionally, five reference persons were summoned: Shin Bonggi, professor at Kyungpook National University Law School; Yoon Changhyun, professor at University of Seoul; Shin Pyeong, lawyer; Choi Baegun, professor of economics at Konkuk University; and Hong Jongho, professor of environmental planning at Seoul National University.
On the first day of the confirmation hearing, the 7th, nominee Jeong will deliver an opening statement, followed by verification of his morality and work capability. On the second day, the 8th, verification of nominee Jeong himself will continue along with questioning of witnesses and reference persons.
Some voices express concerns that nominee Jeong’s hearing may face difficulties.
In particular, since the ruling and opposition parties continue a strong confrontation over the adoption of witnesses in the confirmation committee, and with the general election approaching, the power struggle is expected to intensify.
A representative of the Korean Party stated, "There was criticism that the verification was not properly conducted during the confirmation hearing of Minister of Justice Choo Mi-ae, so this time we intend to thoroughly verify suspicions such as income tax evasion and traffic law violations."
