He then attended the Seoul City New Year's ceremony at 10 a.m., and at noon, he held a meeting and lunch with 120 public workers (directly employed sanitation workers) of Dongdaemun-gu.
Mayor Yoo’s choice to hold a meeting with the public workers responsible for street cleanliness as the first district event of the new year reflects his usual interest and commitment to sanitation.
Thanks to these efforts, Dongdaemun-gu was selected first place in the 2019 Urban Cleanliness Citizen Evaluation conducted among Seoul’s autonomous districts last year, receiving a special adjustment grant of 100 million won.
During the meeting, Mayor Yoo shook hands with the 120 public workers, commending their hard work last year and expressing gratitude for the good results. He also urged them to “continue working diligently this year while paying attention to safety accidents so that citizens can be satisfied with a clean city.”
After the meeting, at 2 p.m., he attended the Dongdaemun-gu New Year's ceremony held in the district office multipurpose auditorium. Before his greeting, Mayor Yoo brought district executives onto the stage to perform a traditional New Year's bow (sebae) with the staff, receiving great applause as a way of asking for their cooperation in operating the district administration well in the new year.
At the ceremony, Mayor Yoo expressed his gratitude to the staff, saying, “Despite difficult circumstances last year, Dongdaemun-gu managed without major problems. I believe this was thanks to the active cooperation of residents and the devoted service of the employees.”
He continued, “We need to think together about what must be done this year. The most important thing is safety. Our district has many aging areas and traditional markets. We must thoroughly inspect all areas including fire prevention, facility management, flood control, and snow removal,” emphasizing safety in particular.
He also urged all departments to cooperate smoothly in addressing pressing issues such as ▲improving childcare and educational environments to solve low birth rates ▲strengthening welfare for marginalized groups including low-income families and the disabled ▲elderly issues ▲reconstruction and redevelopment ▲and the construction of the Seoul Representative Library in Jeonnong 7 District.
