View original image[Asia Economy Reporter Choi Dae-yeol] Kim Sung-joo, chairman of the National Pension Service, has decided to step down with about one year left in his term. It is reported that he plans to run in the upcoming April parliamentary election.
According to the National Pension Service and political circles on the 2nd, Chairman Kim announced his intention to resign to employees at the year-end closing ceremony last year. It is known that he expressed his resignation to the Blue House. Earlier, he shared on his personal social media that he would hold book launch events on the 8th and 11th in Seoul and Jeonju, respectively.
Chairman Kim was appointed as the chairman of the National Pension Service for a three-year term in November 2017. He has served for over two years and has about one year remaining. He is from Jeonju, Jeollabuk-do, where the service headquarters is located, and previously served as a member of the Health and Welfare Committee in the 19th National Assembly.

In the 2016 general election, Chairman Kim ran as the Democratic Party candidate in Jeonju-si Byeong district, Jeollabuk-do, competing against Jeong Dong-young, the People's Party candidate (currently the leader of the Party for Democracy and Peace). He narrowly lost by 989 votes. It is reported that there are no specific movements regarding the nomination in this area within or outside the party yet.
