The Era of Dining Out with Dogs... Restaurants Now Allow Pets Inside
Going to a cafe or restaurant with your dog is expected to become an even more natural part of daily life.
Previously, restaurants generally prohibited pets due to hygiene and safety concerns.
However, with changes in the law, restaurants that meet certain conditions can now allow customers to bring their pets.
According to the industry, an amended enforcement regulation of the Food Sanitation Act has been in effect since March 1, 2026.
As a result, bringing dogs and cats into restaurants is now legally permitted.
However, not every restaurant allows this.
Owners must ensure their facilities meet the required standards and choose to operate accordingly.
Strict Requirements for Pet-Friendly Restaurants
At the entrance, there must be a sign indicating that only pets with completed vaccinations are allowed.
Vaccination status must also be checked upon entry, using a vaccination booklet or similar documentation.
Inside the restaurant, table spacing must be sufficient to prevent pets from coming into contact with other guests or pets.
Movement of pets inside the premises is generally restricted.
To comply, restaurants must have at least one of the following: a dedicated chair, cage, leash holder, or separate area.
Hygiene management standards have also been strengthened.
Fences must be installed around food handling areas such as kitchens and food storage to prevent pet access.
Covers must be placed over food to prevent pet hair from contaminating it when serving dishes.
Violations of these regulations will result in penalties.
If a pet enters a food handling area or the restriction on pet movement inside the premises is violated,
the restaurant will be suspended for 5 days for the first violation, 10 days for the second, and 20 days for the third.
Growing 'Pet Family' Trend... Dining Culture Is Changing
The increase in 'Pet Family' households, who consider their pets as family members, is also changing the dining-out market.
Beyond simply allowing pets inside, the 'pet dining' trend-enjoying meals together with pets-is spreading.
Pet-friendly restaurants and cafes are rapidly increasing, especially in Seoul and the greater metropolitan area.
Some establishments even offer special course menus exclusively for dogs.
At a pet dining restaurant in Songpa-gu, Seoul, courses for dogs include mushroom soup, steak, and mini tiramisu,
with prices ranging from 27,000 to 29,000 won.
Popular menu items include 'Mampuccino' made with lactose-free milk, 'Croissant' made from rice flour and egg yolk, 'Mungjjonku' dog cookies, and pork cutlet set meals.
Birthday parties for dogs are also held here.
The basic 'dog birthday table' set, decorated with balloons and garlands, costs around 30,000 won,
and only one reservation per day is accepted to ensure privacy.
Among pet owners, celebrating dog birthdays is also becoming increasingly common.
Starbucks and Mad for Garlic Also Open Pet-Friendly Stores
Major franchises like Starbucks and Mad for Garlic have also opened pet-friendly stores.
Starbucks operates pet-friendly indoor locations at The Bukhan River R Branch and Guri Galmae DT Branch,
and the combined number of visitors to these two locations has exceeded 2 million.
Mad for Garlic has opened a 'With Pet' store at the Anseong Starfield Branch, following its Starfield Gyeongsan Branch.
At the Anseong branch, 28 out of 146 seats are designated as a 'pet zone' exclusively for customers with pets.
Shopping Malls Also Expanding 'Pet-Friendly' Spaces
Multipurpose shopping malls such as Starfield and IFC Mall are expanding spaces for customers with pets.
Starfield offers a pet stroller rental service, pet-only elevators, and indoor lounges for pets,
and some locations have created 'pet parks' in the form of grassy plazas.
An industry official said, "Spending related to pets is relatively unaffected by economic fluctuations,"
"Following food, clothing, and grooming, the dining-out market for pets is also rapidly expanding."
