LG AI Research Institute is leading the "AI industrialization" drive by unveiling "Exaone 4.0," which has even passed the "medical licensing exam." This is the first hybrid AI model in Korea, combining a large language model (LLM) with strengths in rapid, knowledge-based answers and a reasoning AI model with problem-solving capabilities.

The expert model has demonstrated outstanding performance, passing nationally certified professional exams, while the on-device model, which can be embedded in home appliances and robots, has surpassed the capabilities of OpenAI's GPT-4o mini. LG's strategy is to accelerate the industrial adoption of AI technology through the commercialization of Exaone 4.0.

On July 15, LG AI Research Institute announced the release of Exaone 4.0, Korea's first hybrid AI model. At this point, only Anthropic in the United States and Alibaba in China have unveiled hybrid AI models. Even OpenAI, widely known for ChatGPT, is still developing its GPT-5 model as a hybrid model.

In benchmark tests, Exaone 4.0 outperformed leading open-weight models from the United States, China, and France, proving its world-class performance. By evaluation category, it scored 92.3 points for general and reasoning ability, 81.8 points for advanced professional knowledge, 66.7 points for coding ability, 75.4 points for scientific problem-solving, and 85.3 points for mathematical problem-solving.

Exaone 4.0 is expected to deliver high-level answers even in fields requiring specialized knowledge. It consists of a 32B expert model (32 billion parameters) and a 1.2B on-device model (1.2 billion parameters). The expert model demonstrated its expertise by passing the written exams for six nationally certified professional licenses: medical doctor, dentist, oriental medicine doctor, customs broker, appraiser, and loss adjuster.

The on-device model, released in December last year as Exaone 3.5 (2.4B model), has been reduced to half its previous size, yet it outperformed OpenAI's GPT-4o mini in evaluation metrics for specialized fields such as mathematics, coding, and science. According to LG, it is the best in the world among AI models of similar scale. The on-device model can be embedded in home appliances and robots, and is expected to secure a leading position in this market.

LG AI Research Institute is moving forward with the commercialization of Exaone 4.0 to usher in the era of AI industrialization. The institute has launched an application programming interface (API) service in partnership with FriendlyAI. This allows anyone?from individual developers to enterprises?to utilize Exaone without the need for high-performance graphics processing units (GPUs). LG AI Research Institute expects that the release of the API will serve as a turning point, accelerating the adoption of AI technology across various industries.

Lee Jinsik, head of Exaone Lab at LG AI Research Institute, stated, "We will continue research and development so that Exaone can become Korea's leading frontier model," and emphasized, "We will prove our competitiveness in the global market."

Meanwhile, LG AI Research Institute will hold the "LG AI Talk Concert 2025" on July 22 at LG Science Park in Seoul, where it will announce the research and development (R&D) achievements of Exaone 4.0 and other AI technologies, as well as future plans.
