Venice has been suffering from a surge in tourism, leading to noise, loss of privacy, and soaring housing prices. Against this backdrop, when Bezos effectively attempted to rent out the entire city for his wedding, local civic groups and residents pushed back. Since last week, around 12 local civic groups have been staging protests against the wedding.

These groups hung a banner reading "No Space for Bezos" on the iconic Rialto Bridge and posted protest posters throughout the city.

International environmental organization Greenpeace also joined the protests, unfurling a banner in St. Mark's Square featuring a smiling photo of Bezos and the English phrase, "If you can rent Venice for your wedding, you should pay more taxes."

Leader Tomaso Cacciari: "The news that Bezos fled from 'Scuola Grande della Misericordia' is a great victory for us."
"We are very proud. We are just ordinary citizens, but by joining forces and acting systematically, we ultimately drove one of the most influential people in the world out of the city."
"On the 28th, we will hold additional protests at the canal, bridges, and narrow streets, making this event a nightmare for Bezos and his guests."
