An Air India passenger plane departing from Ahmedabad International Airport in Gujarat, western India, heading to London Gatwick Airport in the UK, crashed five minutes after takeoff.
At the time of the accident, the passenger plane, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, was carrying a total of 242 people, including 230 passengers and 12 crew members including the captain.
Air India announced that the number of fatalities among the passengers was 241.


The Only Survivor: "I don't remember how I survived"


Bishwashkumar Ramesh, a 40-year-old British national and the sole survivor among the 242 people on board the crashed plane, is currently receiving treatment in a hospital.

According to the Indian media outlet Hindustan Times on June 12 (local time), he stated from his hospital bed that he is a British citizen and was returning to the UK with his brother Ajay, 45, after visiting family in India.


After barely escaping from the wreckage, Bishwashkumar made a video call to his family in the UK to inform them that he had survived. His younger brother Nayan, 27, said, "My brother told our father, 'The plane crashed, but I don't know how I survived.'"

Local Indian medical staff who treated Bishwashkumar told AP News that "he sustained multiple injuries throughout his body, but his life is currently not in danger."


It was reported that his boarding pass indicated seat '11A,' located in front of the mid-cabin emergency exit. According to Reuters, Ahmedabad police stated, "The survivor was near the emergency exit and escaped by jumping out through the emergency door."


At least 265 Dead, A Tragic Catastrophe



At the time of the accident, the plane was carrying a total of 242 people, including 230 passengers and 12 crew members including the captain. Air India announced that the number of fatalities among the passengers was 241.


The aircraft crashed into Meenakshi Parikh Medical College, located in a residential area of Meghaninagar in central Ahmedabad. As a result of this accident, at least 265 people have been confirmed dead so far, but the cause of the crash has not yet been identified.


The US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is planning to dispatch an investigation team to India, and the UK government has also announced plans to send a separate investigation team.
