Chinese Actor Whose Growth Stopped at Age 9 in His 40s: "It's Actually an Advantage for Me"
"I can understand teenagers from an adult's perspective"
Gained recognition through roles in sitcoms and dramas
The story of a Chinese actor who has faced challenges due to halted development in childhood has come to light.
According to the Hong Kong-based South China Morning Post (SCMP) on May 13, actor Hu Shang (40), who is originally from Beijing, was born prematurely. This was due to his mother suffering from malnutrition during pregnancy.
He stopped growing around the age of nine, and his voice did not go through the usual changes of puberty. His height is less than 1.6 meters. Even as an adult, people meeting him for the first time often mistook him for a child and would frequently ask about his age.
Although the specific name of Hu Shang’s condition is not disclosed, the media explained that it is likely a congenital developmental delay resulting from premature birth.
However, instead of despairing over his situation, Hu Shang devoted himself to acting with the support and encouragement of his family. He began to gain public recognition in 2005 with his appearance in the popular family sitcom “Home with Kids.”
At the time, Hu Shang was 19 years old, but he played an elementary school student alongside other actors who were seven years younger than him. In the show, his character called himself a “kung fu master,” but in reality, he was a student who helped push guests in his parents’ bathhouse. The sitcom became one of the most popular in China.
Building on the success of the sitcom, Hu Shang went on to play the role of a rebellious 14-year-old son, Zhang Baojin, in the 2006 TV drama “Stepfather.” He also appeared in the popular historical drama “Zhang Guandong,” where he portrayed a young man surviving in a brutal gold-mining village. In a later interview with a Chinese entertainment outlet, Hu Shang shared, “My youthful appearance could be seen as a drawback, but for me, it’s actually a rare advantage,” explaining, “It allows me to better understand teenage roles from an adult’s perspective.”
In 2013, Hu Shang married Zhao Yin, a high school classmate, but the couple decided not to have children. After their wedding photos were released, some online users posted malicious comments such as “They look like mother and son” and “Did he marry his mother?”
