Pyeongtaek City Welcomes National Assembly Approval of Extension of “Pyeongtaek Special Support Act” Until 2030
Overcoming the 2026 Sunset Crisis, Four-Year Extension Secured
Additional Four Years Gained for Pyeongtaek’s Leap Toward an International City
Key Initiatives Accelerated, Including Godeok International School and Industrial Complex Development
Pyeongtaek City in Gyeonggi Province announced on May 8 that it sincerely welcomes, together with its 660,000 citizens, the final approval of the amendment to the “Special Act on Support for Pyeongtaek City, etc. due to the Relocation of US Forces Korea Bases” (Pyeongtaek Special Support Act) at the National Assembly plenary session on May 7.
With the passage of this amendment, the validity period of the special act, which was originally set to expire at the end of 2026, is extended by four years until December 31, 2030. As a result, Pyeongtaek City will be able to continue receiving compensatory support for citizens who have made sacrifices for national security, and has solidified the legal foundation necessary to push forward with key pending projects vital to the city’s future without interruption.
To prevent administrative and fiscal gaps that could have occurred with the sunset of the special act, Pyeongtaek City has actively persuaded relevant ministries including the Ministry of National Defense, and persistently stressed the necessity of the law’s extension in close cooperation with local National Assembly members Hong Ki-won and Kim Hyun-jung. In particular, Assemblyman Hong Ki-won and Assemblywoman Kim Hyun-jung played decisive roles in the passage of the amendment by sponsoring the bill and raising questions during the National Assembly audit, respectively.
The areas expected to gain the most momentum from this extension are the creation of an international educational environment and the establishment of advanced industrial infrastructure. Major initiatives such as the establishment of the Godeok International School, the development of large-scale industrial complexes, and redevelopment projects for returned US military base sites are anticipated to proceed without delay. In addition, with the ability to secure stable national subsidies, projects to expand living infrastructure and improve residential conditions are also expected to accelerate.
Jung Jangsun, Mayor of Pyeongtaek, expressed his deep gratitude to the local National Assembly members for their tireless efforts to pass the bill, stating, “The extension of the Pyeongtaek Special Support Act was a crucial task that our city needed to resolve in order to truly become an international city.” He added, “With this extension, Pyeongtaek has firmly established the foundation for sustainable growth across industry, economy, culture, and urban development.”
