VR Featuring Korean War Veterans' Testimonies Wins Special Jury Award at SXSW in the US
"Forgotten War" by Artist Kwon Hayoon
The Only Asian Winner at SXSW
The National Asia Culture Center (ACC) under the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism announced on March 20 that its self-produced virtual reality (VR) work "Forgotten War" received the Special Jury Award in the Extended Reality (XR) Experience category at South by Southwest (SXSW).
SXSW, held every March in Austin, Texas, is the world's largest creative industry festival combining film, music, and technology. ACC was the only institution from Asia to receive an award in the XR Experience category for "Forgotten War."
The work is a collaboration between the ACC Interactive Art Research Institute and media artist Kwon Hayoon. Based on vivid testimonies from veterans of the Battle of Jipyongri, a critical turning point in the Korean War, the piece intricately recreates both the horrors and the nobility of history within a VR space.
