It has been reported that Ambassador Kang Kyung-wha to the United States returned to Korea and met with Foreign Minister Cho Hyun at the Government Seoul Office on the 27th. Ambassador Kang is said to have returned to Korea briefly on personal leave. Nevertheless, it appears that she took the opportunity to meet with Minister Cho to discuss current issues between South Korea and the United States.
There are several contentious issues between South Korea and the United States, including the restriction on sharing intelligence related to North Korea and disruptions in security consultations due to the Coupang issue. Amid growing concerns, especially from the opposition, about a potential rift in the alliance, there have even been calls for Minister Cho's dismissal. In addition to high-ranking U.S. administration officials such as Vice President J.D. Vance, 54 Republican members of the U.S. House of Representatives recently sent a joint letter to Ambassador Kang, urging her to stop what they described as "discriminatory regulations against U.S. companies such as Coupang." It is not yet known whether the Korean government has officially responded to this letter, but it appears that Ambassador Kang and Minister Cho also discussed this matter.
