NH Investment & Securities and GS Donghae Power Sign MOU on Mutual Cooperation for Greenhouse Gas Emissions Trading Scheme
On May 20, NH Investment & Securities announced that it has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with GS Donghae Power on "mutual cooperation regarding the greenhouse gas emissions trading scheme." The two companies will work together on consignment trading of emissions allowances and collaborate on carbon finance.
This agreement was established to expand their existing partnership on consignment emissions trading to encompass the entire field of carbon finance. GS Donghae Power is currently conducting actual emissions allowance trading through NH Investment & Securities' "greenhouse gas emissions consignment trading system."
In November of last year, NH Investment & Securities became the first company in Korea to be licensed as an emissions trading intermediary by the Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment. The company goes beyond simple brokerage, regularly providing participating companies with professional information such as emissions market analysis and policy trends.
According to the Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment, the fourth phase planning period (2026–2030) is expected to see the introduction of an emissions futures market and the K-MSR (Market Stabilization Reserve) system, further advancing the financialization of the emissions market. As a result, the need for cooperation between designated companies and financial institutions is growing.
In response to these market changes, the two companies plan to cooperate in the following areas: ▲enhancing the consignment trading system and strengthening information provision ▲establishing a system for exchanging market and policy information and joint response ▲developing financial products based on emissions allowances ▲exploring new business opportunities related to carbon reduction.
Park Gunhu, Executive Director of the Client Solutions Division at NH Investment & Securities, said, "We appreciate that GS Donghae Power is conducting emissions trading securely through our consignment trading system. With this MOU, we aim to expand corporate participation in consignment trading of emissions allowances in Korea and to provide specialized carbon finance solutions."
