This inspection was organized to proactively address changes in organizational structure and working environment ahead of the launch of the integrated airline, and to prevent potential risks that may arise during the aircraft maintenance process.
Participants in the inspection included Joungseok Yoo, Executive Vice President and Head of Safety and Health and Operations at Korean Air; Chanwoo Jeong, Head of Maintenance Division at Korean Air; Youngnam Cho, Chairman of the Korean Air Labor Union; as well as officials from the Industrial Safety and Health Office, the Maintenance Division, and the labor union.
After receiving an on-site briefing and listening to workers' concerns at the Incheon Inspection and Maintenance Team office, the attendees proceeded to sequentially inspect key maintenance sites, including the engine support team, hangar, airframe repair workshop, and the automated warehouse for aircraft parts and materials storage.
In particular, at the hangar where a heavy maintenance check of an Airbus A380 was underway, the team focused on inspecting the safety management status of high-risk processes such as scaffolding (temporary work platforms), aircraft interiors, and confined spaces. They also discussed ways to promote a mutually beneficial safety culture with representatives of partner companies. At the airframe repair workshop, they checked the management of hazardous machinery such as cutting and processing equipment, the use of personal protective equipment, and the handling of chemicals. In the automated warehouse, they reviewed measures to prevent entrapment accidents, the management of fire safety facilities, and checked for emergency evacuation routes and any obstructions in passageways.
Through this inspection, Korean Air aims to identify and address on-site risks jointly with labor, proactively respond to government policies to strengthen safety, and establish a worker-centered safety culture.
Executive Vice President Yoo Joungseok stated, “As we approach the launch of the integrated airline, ‘absolute safety’ is a top priority that cannot be compromised under any circumstances. Labor and management will work as one team to ensure not only aircraft safety but also to create a healthy, safe working environment for all employees, even as the environment changes.”
Chairman Cho Youngnam commented, “It is significant that labor and management jointly inspected the site and discussed ways to make improvements. Strengthening the on-site safety management system and establishing a safety culture will provide substantial benefits.”
