Gyeonggi Province Activates Emergency Duty at Disaster Safety Headquarters at 1 p.m. on 20th in Response to Heavy Rain Forecast
Gyeonggi Province activated its Emergency Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters as heavy rainfall is expected across the entire province from May 20 through the afternoon of May 21.
The province announced that it had taken preemptive action as more than 100mm of rainfall is expected, particularly in the coastal areas of the West Sea and northern Gyeonggi, starting from 1 p.m. on May 20.
Kim Dong-yeon, Governor of Gyeonggi Province, issued a directive on the same day instructing the establishment of a thorough preparatory and rapid on-site response system, centered on deputy heads of local governments. He also ordered continuous monitoring and inspections, including drainage facilities, flood barriers, and pumping stations, as well as the pre-positioning of flood control materials due to the possibility of torrential rain during vulnerable nighttime hours. Additionally, he called for monitoring and inspection of disaster-prone areas such as locations with previous damage, underpasses, underground spaces, riverside walkways, and steep slopes.
The governor also emphasized the active use of the evacuation order authority of township leaders and the resident evacuation support teams to establish a rapid and safe, field-centered evacuation system. He urged prompt dissemination of information and control or evacuation through disaster text alerts, civil defense warning systems, village broadcasts, and disaster early warning facilities in the event of hazardous weather or signs of a disaster.
He further directed inspections and securing measures for signboards, tower cranes, and temporary structures or materials at construction sites to prevent them from toppling or falling due to strong winds.
