Anseong City's Population to Reach 280,000 by 2040... '2040 Urban Master Plan' Approved
The population of Anseong City in Gyeonggi Province is projected to reach 280,000 by 2040.
On May 20, Gyeonggi Province granted final approval for the "Anseong Urban Master Plan for 2040," the highest-level spatial plan outlining Anseong City’s urban spatial structure and land use strategy.
Through this master plan, Anseong City presented future development strategies that reflect changes in the urban environment, such as the opening of the Sejong–Pocheon Expressway.
The main points include setting the target population for 2040 at 280,000—up from the current 210,000—taking into account both the influx of people due to various development projects and demographic projections from Statistics Korea.
In the land use plan, out of the total administrative area of 553.460 km², 18.435 km² is designated as urbanization reserve land to prepare for future urban development, 33.427 km² of existing developed land is designated as urbanized land, and the remaining 501.598 km² is designated as conservation land.
The spatial structure is designed to promote balanced development between regions and foster specialized growth tailored to each area. The city’s functions are systematically distributed into one central urban core, one secondary urban core, one regional center, and six district centers.
The city is divided into three living zones: the western, central, and eastern zones. The western living zone is planned for strategic new town development and residential areas connected to local social overhead capital (SOC); the central living zone is focused on strengthening urban functions and establishing an advanced industrial cluster (semiconductor materials, parts, and equipment); and the eastern living zone is envisioned as a complex logistics and eco-friendly urban-rural convergence hub.
The transportation plan reflects higher-level plans, such as the national road network and railway network plans, and incorporates road and rail projects presented therein. The road network is structured around four east-west corridors, seven north-south corridors, and two circular corridors, to enhance interregional connectivity and accessibility.

Kim Heeseong, Director of Urban Policy at Gyeonggi Province, stated, "With the approval of the Anseong Urban Master Plan for 2040, Anseong City has laid the foundation to become a future-oriented cultural city. Looking ahead, the city will grow into a place where advanced industries and citizens’ daily lives harmonize, through the integrated development of areas around new metropolitan railway stations and the establishment of specialized clusters for semiconductor materials, parts, and equipment."
