Donghae City Accelerates Efforts to Become a Stay-Type Tourism City with "Nights More Beautiful Than Days"
Expanding Nighttime Tourism for the Provincial Residents' Sports Festival and Lavender Festival
Nighttime Landscape Lighting Illuminates the Local Economy
Donghae City in Gangwon Province is set to promote itself as a "tourism city where visitors stay even at night" by connecting nighttime scenic lighting at major attractions with experiential content, in response to the large influx of visitors expected for the Para Sports Games for the Disabled, the Provincial Residents' Sports Festival, and the Lavender Festival in June.
This nighttime tourism initiative focuses on efficiently utilizing existing tourism infrastructure and landscape lighting, rather than expanding new facilities.
The city plans to both extend tourists' length of stay and revitalize the local economy, while maintaining its energy-saving policy through the use of high-efficiency LED lighting and adjustments to lighting hours.
Donghae City has gradually developed nighttime scenic projects around the Chuam, Hanseom, Mangsang, Jeoncheon, and Mureung areas. Recently, the city explained that the trend is shifting from "sightseeing during the day and leaving at night" to a stay-type tourism flow, where nighttime experiences, accommodations, and food consumption are increasing.
In particular, during the Mureungbyeolyucheonji Lavender Festival in June, nighttime opening hours will be implemented. Landscape lighting will be installed to enable nighttime operation of attractions such as the Sky Glider and Alpine Coaster, and purple lights will illuminate the lavender garden area, offering a unique nighttime tourism experience that differs from the daytime.
In the Chuam area, the "Chuam Dawn Light Theme Park" is the centerpiece, featuring specialized lighting for the sculpture park, media facades, and starlight illumination, creating a nighttime landscape that blends light, nature, and art.
Hanseom Beach has established itself as a nighttime walking destination with its rhythmic gate and light tunnel, while the Jeoncheon area, centered on the Floating Bridge Garden and Character Park, is drawing attention as a nighttime healing space linked to the Haebaranggil Trail.
