OpenAI Considers Legal Action Against Apple: "ChatGPT Integration Falls Short of Expectations"
OpenAI is reportedly considering legal action against Apple. This stems from the belief that the collaboration between the two companies to integrate ChatGPT into Apple devices, such as the iPhone, has not achieved the expected results.
According to Bloomberg on May 14 (local time), OpenAI has retained external law firms to review potential legal measures against Apple. OpenAI had anticipated that Apple would more actively integrate ChatGPT functions into its operating system (OS) and devices, improving user accessibility. However, OpenAI believes that the actual level of implementation has fallen short of these expectations.
In June 2024, Apple unveiled its proprietary artificial intelligence (AI) system, "Apple Intelligence," and announced the integration of ChatGPT with its voice assistant, Siri. At the time, the partnership drew attention because Apple, seen as lagging in the AI race, could enhance Siri’s capabilities through ChatGPT, while OpenAI stood to gain access to Apple’s vast user base.
However, OpenAI believes that the collaboration with Apple has not produced the anticipated results. OpenAI had hoped ChatGPT would be more deeply integrated within Apple’s OS and placed in prominent positions. In reality, the scope of utilization was limited. There were also complaints that the process of invoking ChatGPT through Siri was not straightforward, and even when connected, responses were shorter and more restricted compared to the standalone ChatGPT app.
OpenAI also considers that this implementation has negatively impacted its brand image. The company had expected to generate billions of dollars in annual subscription revenue by attracting Apple device users, but the actual performance fell short of these projections.
The relationship between the two companies is shifting toward competition just two years after announcing their partnership. In addition to OpenAI, Apple is pursuing the adoption of other AI models, such as Google Gemini and Anthropic Claude. However, OpenAI explained that since its agreement with Apple was not exclusive, Apple’s adoption of other AI models is not the direct reason for reviewing legal action.
OpenAI is also increasing the possibility of competing with Apple. OpenAI has entered the AI hardware market by acquiring 'io,' an AI device startup founded by Apple’s former chief design officer Jony Ive. Sam Altman, OpenAI’s CEO, also mentioned at the end of last year that Apple and OpenAI would become competitors.
