Putin Proposes Mediation Plan: Willing to Store Iran's Enriched Uranium in Russia
Ukraine War “Nearing Its End,”
Putin Proposes Talks in Moscow
Russian President Vladimir Putin has officially proposed a mediation plan to "receive and store" enriched uranium in Russia, addressing one of the key issues in the ceasefire negotiations between the United States and Iran.
According to DPA and other sources on May 9 (local time), President Putin stated during a press conference after the Victory Day parade that if an agreement is reached to end the Iran war, Russia is ready to transfer and store Iran's enriched uranium. He referred to Russia's experience during the 2015 nuclear deal, and, as the United States has recently demanded that the uranium be transferred to the U.S., emphasized once again that Russia could serve as an alternative. Previously, U.S. President Donald Trump had rejected Russia's offer of assistance, but President Putin maintains that he will continue to engage the United States and Iran and fulfill Russia's role in the negotiations.
Regarding the war in Ukraine, Putin assessed that "the war is nearing its end" and expressed his willingness to hold direct talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Moscow. However, he drew a line, stating that holding talks outside Moscow would only be possible after a long-term peace agreement is reached.
On the European security framework, Putin named former German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder as his negotiation counterpart, expressing a willingness to engage in dialogue. Schroeder is known as a prominent pro-Russian figure who has maintained close ties with Russia even during the war in Ukraine.
