Ahead of the June 3 local elections, the civil society in Goyang, Gyeonggi Province, has issued a strong warning message concerning the increasingly heated mudslinging among mayoral candidates in the region.
On the 9th, "Goyang Light Coalition," composed of more than 20 civic groups including the Goyang Regional Goyang Citizens' Association and the Gyeonggi Disabled Human Rights Forum, called for a strong judgment against the black propaganda targeting Min Kyungseon, the Democratic Party candidate for mayor of Goyang, and the acts damaging democracy. In its statement, Goyang Light Solidarity emphasized, "Candidate Min Kyung-sun was confirmed as the final candidate for the Democratic Party through a legitimate nomination process," adding, "We reaffirm that he is a 'citizen policy companion candidate' who has pledged to embrace the policies of Goyang's civil society and to engage in open communication."
The statement continued, "Recently, there have been disgraceful attempts to distort public sentiment in the region, such as the spread of anonymous false information and even rumors of replacing the candidate," warning, "Some media outlets that report unverified, one-sided claims without scrutiny, along with those who exploit these politically, must immediately cease these acts that undermine democracy."
Goyang Light Solidarity is not stopping at issuing a statement but is also taking concrete action. On the morning of the 9th at 11 a.m., a delegation of eight leaders—including Hong Young-pyo, Standing Representative; Kim Cheol-gi, Secretary-General; and Choi Deok-hee, Director of External Cooperation of the National Situation Conference—visited the Democratic Party's central headquarters in Yeouido, Seoul.
During a meeting with Secretary-General Cho Seung-rae, they personally delivered the statement and conveyed, without reservation, the concerns and critical public opinion of Goyang citizens regarding actions that undermine a legitimately nominated candidate.
Hong Young-pyo, Standing Representative of Goyang Light Solidarity, stated, "It is deeply regrettable that at a time when we should hold the past four years of closed-mindedness and dogmatism accountable and design Goyang's future, slander and agitation are rampant. Baseless attacks will ultimately return like a boomerang, and the citizens of Goyang will make their choices based solely on policies and their happiness."

Meanwhile, Goyang Light Solidarity, which was launched in March, has been at the forefront of creating a citizen-led electoral culture. In early April, it hosted the '2026 Goyang Future Festa' at Goyang KINTEX, which was attended by about 500 citizens. The group has remained active by rigorously vetting the policies of mayoral and city/provincial council candidates and designating “citizen policy companion candidates.”
