The Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency issued a Japanese encephalitis advisory nationwide on March 20, after the first sighting this year of the Culex tritaeniorhynchus mosquito, a vector of Japanese encephalitis, was confirmed in Jeju.
In response, Jeollanam-do is conducting intensive quarantine disinfection in 26,922 vulnerable locations across 22 cities and counties until April 30, focusing on areas prone to mosquito breeding during the thawing season. Disinfection efforts have been reinforced around major mosquito larval habitats such as sewers, garbage dumps, and livestock facilities.
For vulnerable sites, tailored disinfection using eco-friendly chemicals is being implemented, and additional control measures will be pursued following temperature rises and rainfall. In particular, the province plans to designate vulnerable areas in each town and township for ongoing management and to minimize blind spots in disease control through focused prevention measures.
Japanese encephalitis is mostly asymptomatic, but in some cases can progress to severe symptoms such as high fever, headache, and convulsions, making prevention crucial. The province plans to focus all efforts on disease prevention through proactive disinfection and a mosquito vector surveillance system.
