Gwangju Seo-gu Offers Traditional Culture Experiences in Spring Hanok
Opportunities to Enjoy Urban Culture
from Sauce Making to Picnics
Seo-gu District in Gwangju Metropolitan City is offering a unique experience where visitors can enjoy both the atmosphere of spring and traditional culture in a hanok located in the heart of the city. Throughout the month of April, Seo-gu will be running a traditional culture program at the Seochang Hanok Culture Center under the theme “Spring in the Hanok, Meeting Tradition.”
This program consists of hands-on experiences such as traditional food making with designated holders of intangible cultural heritage, hanok picnics, and traditional craft workshops.
On April 4, the “Grandmother’s Recipe” program will allow participants to make traditional sauces themselves. The event will feature the holder of Intangible Cultural Heritage No. 17 for Namdo Ritual Cuisine in Gwangju, who will share the value of traditional food culture along with the unique flavors and wisdom of Korea.
On April 11 and 25, a seasonal program titled “Village Connection, Four Seasons Journey - Spring” will link the cultural and ecological resources of Seochang-dong. Participants will be able to tour local attractions such as Mangwijung and Nannumnuri Garden with a guide, enjoy a spring flower picnic, busking performances, and other hands-on activities.
In addition, there will be free hands-on programs such as “Weekend Hanok Workshop” on April 11 and 18, where participants can plant succulents and make wooden bead bracelets; the “Famous Academy” traditional culture class on April 14, featuring flat knot bracelet making and planting succulents in lucky baskets; and the “Spring: Hwajeon Nori” seasonal custom experience on April 18, which will include making flower rice cakes and flower tea. These activities are designed to make traditional culture easy and enjoyable to learn.
Applications for program participation can be made by visiting the Seochang Hanok Culture Center or by phone, and some programs may require a materials fee or a participation fee.
