"Lose Weight and Get Beef": 2,400 Join in Three Days... China's Weight Loss Program Gains Popularity
2,400 Applicants in Just Three Days
A local community in China has attracted attention by launching a unique program that rewards residents who successfully lose weight with beef.
According to the South China Morning Post (SCMP) on March 18 (local time), the Sanbei community in Liangxi District, Wuxi City, Jiangsu Province, China, recently introduced a "Fat-for-Beef Exchange" campaign. Since recruitment began via social media on March 9, the policy has generated significant interest, with more than 2,400 people applying to participate within just three days.
This program is a weight loss challenge, open only to local employees who pay social insurance or medical insurance in the area. Participants must have a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 23 or higher, and their waist circumference must exceed 80 cm for women and 90 cm for men.
Applications are open until March 20, and participants must have their initial weight measured at designated locations between March 23 and March 27. After attempting to lose weight, a second measurement will be taken between January 1 and January 10 of next year to confirm the final results.
The reward system is also noteworthy. For each 0.5 kg of weight lost, participants receive either 0.5 kg of beef or 1.5 kg of beef bone. Losing 1 kg earns 0.5 kg of oxtail, while losing 1.5 kg is rewarded with 0.5 kg of beef offal, and losing 2 kg provides 0.5 kg of beef tongue. The rewards are recognized for up to a maximum of 10 kg of weight loss.
The authorities stated, "The more weight you lose, the more rewards you can receive." They also warned against extreme weight loss methods such as taking diet pills or inducing vomiting, emphasizing, "Weight should be lost using proper methods. If health issues arise due to inappropriate methods, the responsibility lies with the individual."
Upon hearing the news, online users expressed a range of reactions including, "Is there such a program in Nanjing? I want to join," "I'm envious of the residents in that community," and "This is a really good policy."

Meanwhile, this policy was launched as China's central government grows increasingly concerned about nationwide obesity issues. Earlier this month, at the National People's Congress (NPC), Lei Haichao, Director of the National Health Commission, stated, "We will continue to promote weight management policies to reduce the incidence of chronic diseases."
