Economic Education Starts in Elementary School... Gyeongbuk Office of Education Distributes 22,600 Copies of "The First Step to Learning Economics"
The Gyeongbuk Office of Education (Superintendent Lim Jong-sik) announced on February 13 that it has produced the economic education material titled "The First Step to Learning Economics Easily" to promote economic and financial education linked to the real lives of upper-grade elementary school students, and will distribute 22,600 copies for students and 1,800 copies for teachers.
The Gyeongbuk Office of Education has been continuously strengthening economic and financial education in elementary schools to respond proactively to the rapidly changing socio-economic environment and to foster future economic talent.
The purpose of distributing this material is to help students understand economic principles in their daily lives and to support them in developing the ability to make rational decisions.
The elementary school economic education teaching and learning material "The First Step to Learning Economics Easily" was first developed in 2021 and has been steadily improved to reflect changing times and the needs of the educational field. This year, its content was supplemented and updated to match the level of elementary school students by incorporating recent economic trends and the revised curriculum.
The material will be distributed sequentially starting on February 20 and is designed for 5th and 6th grade elementary school students. It can be used as economic and financial education material linked to cross-curricular learning themes, and in particular, the 6th grade materials can be used as class resources connected to related subjects.
In line with the implementation of the 2022 revised curriculum, and considering the operation of elementary school "school autonomous hours" and the possibility of subject approval, the program has been expanded from the existing 10 sessions to 15 sessions. The Gyeongbuk Office of Education plans to apply to have this material approved as a superintendent-authorized subject in the future, thereby further enhancing its utility and educational value in schools.
The main contents are organized around topics closely related to real life, such as: "How can we earn and spend money?", "How can we increase our income?", "Why do countries compete and cooperate with each other?", and "Can we solve social problems through consumption?". The material consists of a total of 15 sessions and is designed to be implemented in connection with related school subjects.
In addition, to help students understand economic concepts easily and enjoyably, video materials linked to play-based activities are provided, and PowerPoint materials for each session are also offered to support teachers' lessons. The teachers' guidebook incorporates the latest economic and financial education video materials, teaching and learning guides, and reading materials, so that it can reduce teachers' lesson preparation burden and improve the quality of instruction.
