Housing Pension Subscribers Exceed 150,000...Establishing Itself as a Retirement Safety Net for the Elderly
18 years after its 2007 launch... average age 72.4, monthly benefit 1.27 million won
Korea Housing Finance Corporation (President Kim Gyeonghwan) announced on February 4 that the cumulative number of Housing Pension subscribers has exceeded 150,000. To commemorate this milestone, the corporation held a ceremony that day to celebrate reaching 150,000 subscribers.
The Housing Pension is a scheme under which South Korean citizens aged 55 or older who own a home with an officially assessed value of 1.2 billion won or less can pledge their own home as collateral and receive a stable lifelong pension. Since its launch in July 2007, it has served to supplement post-retirement income for the elderly and function as an old-age safety net.
The 150,000th subscriber is senior citizen Yu Sanggeum, who lives in an apartment located in Gwangju. The subscriber stated that they chose the Housing Pension because it allows them to live in their own home for life while receiving a monthly pension.
Kim Gyeonghwan, President of Korea Housing Finance Corporation, said, "Exceeding 150,000 cumulative Housing Pension subscribers is a meaningful achievement made possible by the trust and interest of the people," adding, "We will continue to improve the system and customer service so that it can serve as a reliable old-age safety net for the elderly."
