On January 29, Naju City announced that Sanho District in Munpyeong-myeon and Ilheung District in Wanggok-myeon were selected as a new project site and a basic survey site, respectively, for the drainage improvement project overseen by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs.
The drainage improvement project is a government-funded initiative that expands infrastructure such as the installation of drainage stations and maintenance of drainage channels to prevent recurring farmland flooding caused by typhoons and heavy rainfall. The entire project is funded by the national government.
Sanho District in Munpyeong-myeon, selected as a new project site, has already completed its basic survey and has long been identified as an area urgently in need of drainage facility improvements. Full-scale construction will begin this year.
Naju City has continuously advocated for the necessity of the project in cooperation with the Korea Rural Community Corporation. With this selection, a total of 11.9 billion won in national funds will be invested to build new drainage stations, reinforce existing drainage facilities, and maintain drainage channels.
Ilheung District in Wanggok-myeon has been selected as a basic survey site this time.
Ilheung District has repeatedly suffered from flooding because drainage is not smooth during the rise of the Manbongcheon water level and heavy rainfall. This year, the city will analyze the feasibility of the project and collect residents' opinions to determine whether to proceed with the main project in the future.
Once this project is completed, drainage facilities in the Sanho and Ilheung districts will be significantly improved, which is expected to not only prevent farmland flooding but also enhance the farming environment and increase agricultural productivity.
