Gyeongsan Wins Grand Prize in Urban Regeneration Performance Evaluation, Driven by Success of Seosang-gil Youth Cultural Village
Ranked First Nationwide Among Over 70 Project Sites in Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport Evaluation
On December 10, the city of Gyeongsan announced that it received the Grand Prize in the Urban Regeneration Comprehensive Performance Evaluation for Operation and Management (Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport Award) at the opening ceremony of the '2025 Urban Regeneration Festival' held at the Conrad Hotel in Yeouido, Seoul. This award is given to the municipality with the most outstanding operational performance among all completed project sites nationwide.
This evaluation is the highest honor, with only one out of more than 70 completed project sites across the country being selected for the Grand Prize. The Seosang-gil Youth Cultural Village Urban Regeneration Project was recognized for its excellent achievements in operational performance, governance, and sustainability.
The year 2025 marks the 10th anniversary of the introduction of the Urban Regeneration New Deal Project in South Korea. To commemorate this milestone, the Urban Regeneration Festival was organized under the theme '10 Years Together, A New Beginning,' reflecting on the achievements of the past decade and pledging a new start for the next ten years.
The event was attended by representatives from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, LH, the Housing and Urban Guarantee Corporation (HUG), the Korea Productivity Center, the Korea Research Institute for Human Settlements, as well as urban regeneration experts and local government officials, who shared the outcomes of urban regeneration policies and discussed future strategies.
The Grand Prize in the Operation and Management category is a core field that evaluates the sustainability of urban regeneration, comprehensively verifying various factors such as: ▲ operational performance of key facilities ▲ resident and youth participation governance ▲ utilization of cultural content ▲ recovery of the local economy ▲ linkage with private investment, among others.
The Seosang-gil Youth Cultural Village was selected as the best case nationwide, receiving high marks for its operation of 'Seosang Cafe' based on the restoration of modern hanok, establishment of the 'Gyeongsan Webtoon Creative Studio' in connection with the webtoon and comic industry, a resident-centered village management cooperative system, expansion of living infrastructure such as park and pedestrian environment improvements, and the spread of youth entrepreneurship and private investment.
